The See Through Guitar

The "Dan Armstrong See Through" Guitar and "See Through" Bass, distributed through Ampeg and Company in Linden, New Jersey, hit the market in 1960. Made of clear Lucite, the Dan Armstrong weren't the first see through guitars to make the scene, but it was the first clear guitar to go into mass production with the Lucite being the basis. (A Fender Strat had been made in the 50's of Lucite and traveled around as novelty, but a version was not offered for purchase by the general public.)

Not all Dan Armstrong See Through Guitars were "see through." Black Lucite was used to create several of the instruments.

Who played Dan Armstrong Guitars? Keith Richard and Geezer Butler among many others.

Production ceased in 1971.

Dan the Man

Dan Armstrong was born October 7, 1934, in Lakewood, Ohio. He began playing the guitar at age 11 and became an accomplished studio musician some years later averaging a recording a week. That logically led to his hitting the road. When he borrowed equipment for his gigs on the road, the lender noticed that the instruments were returned in better shape than they had gone out. Soon Dan was repairing guitars as a result.

He finally opened his own repair shop in 1965 called Dan Armstrong's Guitar Service. Dan continued his studio work as his repair and lutherie business grew.
