Larrivee Vintage Guitars

Return To Articles Table of Contents
Throughout time, music has changed greatly. Musical instruments have followed the changing of the tide as well. Playing an integral part in music are guitars. Vintage guitars truly play an important role in musical history.

Such an integral part of musical history are Larrivee guitars. The name of the guitar is taken from its name sake, Jean Larrivee. Following the guidance of a fellow German classical guitar builder, Edgar Monch, Larrivee began to construct his first guitar. Larrivee created his first guitar at the young age of twenty four. After constructing two guitars under Monch's guidance, Jean Larrivee knew that building guitars was his life's passion.

Living above a theater, Jean quickly became friends with many folk singers. As the singers learned of his guitar making skills, they could put in requests for particular guitars. One of the main requests was for a steel string guitar. After much experimenting, Jean created his first steel string guitar in 1971. Jean Larrivee knew that he has mastered his craft when a mistake in his manufacturing led to the perfect balance and tune that he was looking for.

At the beginning of September 2001, the Larrivee company moved to its present day facilities in Vancouver. A few days later, the attacks on the World Trade Centers occurred. This led to a huge decrease in sales, as individuals were not concerned with the sales and purchases of a guitar at that time. Following September 2001, only 35 guitars were being sold a day. The Larrivee company was forced to make changes to their guitars, as well as add additional guitars to their line. Changes and additions to the Larrivee guitars seemed beneficial, as the Larrivee company is now a thriving company once again.

Since the first Larrivee guitar sold in 1968, vintage Larrivee guitars are in great demand. Many individuals appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into the creation of every Larrivee guitar. Since the guitar is not yet as old as many others which fall under the "vintage guitar" umbrella, it is easier for a collector to locate a vintage Larrivee guitar, whether it be online or through an antique dealer. There are many stories that can be told with a Larrivee guitar...and many stories that are yet to be created.
