Mossman Vintage Guitars

Return To Articles Table of Contents
One of the most regarded vintage guitars is the Mossman guitar. Many individuals appreciate this guitar for the fine craftsmanship and detail that was put into each Mossman guitar. Mossman created a name for themselves with the creation of their unique guitars in the late 60s.

At the height of folk music that hit the 1970s, many manufacturers were scrambling to create guitars for budding musicians. After handcrafting almost 50 guitars, Stuart Mossman decided that he must be doing something wrong. He noticed that while major guitar companies were cranking out one guitar after another, his guitars were not selling. People were wanting to buy name brand guitars, and were dismissing the fine handiwork that went into his creations. Such statistics did not hinder Stuart Mossman from creating his dream. In 1970, Mossman guitars hit the music scene as one of the most profitable small guitar companies of its time.

With great detail given to every handcrafted Mossman guitar, only the finest of woods were used. Opposing those companies that used plywood, Mossman vowed to use the highest quality of wood available. Although his guitars were quite beautiful, they were definitely on the higher end of the retail market. In 1972, his Tennessee Flat Top model, constructed of mahogany back and sides, with a rosewood fingerboard and bridge, was being sold for $350.00. His most expensive guitar was the Golden Era Custom, which included an abalone inlay. This now vintage guitar was being sold for $1,400 in 1972.

Although Stuart Mossman endured many production setbacks, including a fire to his warehouse, a storage facility where many of his guitars for sale were damaged, he never gave up his dream. The quality of a vintage Mossman guitar can not be surpassed. The detail to the work of the guitar is apparent in all of their handcrafted pieces. Mossman Guitars continue to sell their vintage and new guitars from their current Sulphur Springs, Texas location. Nothing can stop a dream; especially the dream that lives in a musician's heart.
