Vintage Guitar Serial Numbers - Hofner

Hofner serial numbers do not provide an exact dating system. The guitars were available in Germany beginning in 1949, but weren't exported to England until 1958 when Selmer of London took over distribution. The Selmer models were UK specific; hence, differed from those available in Germany.

The best way to date a Hofner is by pickup installation. Not exact, but close. There were transitional pieces and combinations. Adjustable truss rods didn't appear until 1960. Guitars produced before 1960 won't have a truss rod cover.

Six star slot pole piece - by Fuma.	1953-1959
Black, brown, or white plastic; plain tops. Square or oval ends.	1957-1960
Rectangular metal case with four black slits in the top; Hofner diamond logo.	1960-1961
Rectangular metal case, six slot screw or six rectangular pole pieces. Possible Hofner diamond logo.	1961-1963
Rectangular metal case, six slot screw and six rectangular pole pieces.	1963-1967
Rectangular metal case, single central bar magnet and six small slot screw pole pieces.	1967-1978

Beginning in the late 60's, Hofner introduced several guitars based on Classic American favorites. In these, they used OEM pickups from DiMarzio, Schaller, and Shadow.
